Why ADHD Isn’t a Disorder. It’s Evolutionary Wiring

ADHD father in a journey for clarity

ADHD is not a pathology but an evolution‑shaped operating system, writes Eduardo, founder of The Mental Dojo. Drawing on the hunter‑gatherer past, he argues that the quick‑scanning, hyper‑responsive “hunter” brain—once crucial for tribal survival—clashes with today’s sit‑still, repetition‑based culture, which favors “gatherer” traits. The mismatch explains why ADHD appears in only 2–5 % of the general population yet in about 20 % of both entrepreneurs and prison inmates: some harness it to build their own structures, while others are punished for breaking ill‑fitting ones. Eduardo recounts his own brush with addiction before learning to design routines that work with, not against, his wiring, and he now helps fellow “hunters” do the same—reframing ADHD as an asset built for chaos, not a flaw to be fixed.

Why ADHD Isn’t a Disorder. It’s Evolutionary Wiring

Hi. I’m Eduardo, founder of the Mental Dojo, a platform that helps men with ADHD create systems and routines that match their brain, and provide them with structure.

If you ever feel that your mind works differently (because it does) then this post is for you.

We celebrate diversity.

Culture, gender, race, height, even coffee preferences. But when it comes to neurodiversity, we get weirdly silent.

Especially ADHD.

It’s like saying it out loud means there’s something wrong with you.

But what if it’s just a different operating system for the brain?

Let’s rewind 10,000 years

Back in hunter-gatherer tribes, the gatherers were focused.

They could sort berries for hours. Tune everything out. Total concentration.

That worked because their job was predictable.

But the hunters?

They were the tribe’s radar.

Focused, yes.
But also scanning, shifting, responding. Noticing the twig snap behind the bush while everyone else was tunnel-visioned on the trail.

Hyper-awareness wasn’t a weakness. It was life-saving.

So why is that same brain wiring a “problem” now?

Because modern society is built for gatherers.

Schools reward sitting still. Offices reward repetition. Life rewards consistency.

And if your brain doesn’t fit the mold? You’re told you’re lazy. Or defiant. Or broken.

Here’s a stat that hits hard:
ADHD shows up in 2–5% of the population…
But nearly 20% of entrepreneurs and 20% of prison inmates.

Why? Because some of us figured out how to create systems that fit our brains. And some of us got punished for breaking the ones that didn’t.

I’ve danced with both paths.

My therapist once told me I was headed straight for textbook alcoholism.

He wasn’t wrong.

But something shifted.

I took the long, painful road toward self-awareness and structure.

Now I help other ADHD ‘hunters’ build tools, systems, and rituals that work with their minds — not against them.

Because ADHD isn’t a curse.

It’s a different interface, not a defective one.

And once you understand how to use it, really use it instead of hiding it, you stop seeing yourself as a mistake and start seeing yourself as the type of human evolution built for chaos.

So if you’ve ever felt broken…

Just remember: Every tribe needed gatherers.
But they also needed hunters.

If you’re done trying to “fix” yourself and want to build a system that works with your brain, not against it, you can find me on X as @ItsEduardoG and join The Mental Dojo.

See you in the field, hunters.

Why Helpful ADHD Tools Start to Feel Like Another Burden

Many adults with ADHD do not stop using helpful tools because they do not care. Often they stop because the support itself starts asking for more than they can keep giving. What looked like relief at first slowly turns into one more thing to manage, remember, and feel bad about.

Why ADHD Makes Starting Feel Physically Impossible

For many adults with ADHD, the hardest part is not doing the task itself. It is getting across the strange gap between wanting to begin and being able to begin. That gap is often mistaken for laziness, when in reality it often feels more like friction.

The REAL ADHD Conversation

Ashlee Richardson, 37, lays out the messy, unfiltered reality of living with ADHD – how childhood OCD rituals morphed into anxiety, depression, and executive dysfunction, and how “fixing” her brain through school pressure and psychiatric meds often made things worse. She traces the whiplash of stimulants and antidepressants, the cost of burnout, and the search for answers through biology, lifestyle, and nutrition, landing on a hard-won acceptance: she may never have a neat label or linear routine, but she can still build a life around intense bursts of creativity, work that fits her wiring, and small, practical shifts that help her feel human.
